🎹 Discovering Dreamkid: Music That Feels Like a Cult Film 📺🌴

Today I want to talk about an artist I listen to often, someone I’ve followed for a long time and truly feel compelled to share. Among all the emerging musicians I’ve discovered over the years, Dreamkid is probably the one who has given me the strongest and most authentic vibes.

Originally from South Africa but now based in London, Dreamkid allowed us — especially during the global lockdown — to explore a nostalgic and dreamlike world made of synthwave, neon, and pure retro-futuristic imagination.

I first discovered him through the Shorts he posted on his YouTube channel: short videos filled with neon atmospheres, first-person POV dialogues, floating melodies, and emotionally charged aesthetics. They weren’t just clips — they were windows into an ’80s cinematic universe, perfectly crafted and dropped with impeccable timing to evoke every scene, every emotion, every memory. They spoke to me directly.

Listening to his music feels like being transported straight into an ’80s cult film: flickering neon lights, sunset cityscapes, intense emotions that play like the soundtrack of late-night highway chases or solitary moments of reflection. Some tracks even drift into a kind of elegant, atmospheric cinematic darkwave.

When I listen to songs from his albums Dreamkid or Daggers, I feel a powerful connection. It’s as if someone had transformed into music exactly what I used to feel as a kid while watching late ’80s and early ’90s movies on TV, sitting next to my father. There’s something deeply emotional and intimate in the way he composes.

In my opinion, Dreamkid stands out because he has a rare stylistic coherence: he hits a precise mood with disarming clarity — never too nostalgic to become cliché, never too modern to lose that retro charm that defines him. It’s as if he has a laser aimed at the emotional target: he nails the rhythms, the notes, the atmosphere, and enhances everything with a visual style clearly shaped by personal research and a genuine love for the genre.
