They Live: A Timeless Horror Masterpiece 😎🧟‍♂️

Among the many films that best represent the style we love, how can we not mention John Carpenter? One of the most influential directors, screenwriters, and composers in American horror and sci-fi cinema. His career is distinguished by a recognizable style: minimalist suspense, memorable electronic soundtracks, and often a mix of social critique and pure entertainment.

Today, I want to share how much impact the film They Live (1988) had on me. A social sci-fi movie that blends horror, action, and political satire, it has become a true cult classic for its sharp critique of consumerism and the media. 🌴

In the story, a drifter played by Roddy Piper discovers special sunglasses that reveal a hidden reality: a class of aliens controlling society, manipulating media and advertising. I won’t spoil too much, but the aspect that struck me most is the social critique, suspended between the ’80s—a time of rampant consumerism—and those who only have hazy, nostalgic memories of that era, longing to relive its energy and innocence.

Carpenter sharply criticizes advertising, consumerism, and above all media manipulation. Hidden messages like OBEY, CONSUME, CONFORM have become iconic. If I may be a little self-critical, I have to admit they worked on me too, and they remain extremely relevant: today more than ever, we realize that among thousands of products, the best product for the market is always us. This theme even reminded me of some episodes of Black Mirror, showing how the film remains incredibly relevant even decades later.

The movie uses a stark contrast between perceived reality and “real” reality, emphasized by the special sunglasses, delivering a visual and conceptual experience that stays with you. 😎

So, if you haven’t seen They Live yet, I invite you to watch it. But be careful: put on your metaphorical “sunglasses” to stay awake and aware of those trying to manipulate us. Because sometimes, the real horror isn’t the aliens… it’s the world around us 🌴🧟‍♂️ and the way it’s presented to us.
